General conditions for adoption
After the minimum period set by law good-natured healthy animals become available for adoption: In the case of an animal that is not identified within a period of 10 days, or if the animal has not been claimed by its owner within a period of 19 days.
Individuals who wish to acquire a dog from APA Nerja-Esperanza must fill out a pre-adoption form. Once that’s completed and we have evaluated the profile of the adopter (as not all families or dogs are alike), we will meet you and visit the home where you will reside with the animal(s).
Once you have chosen the most appropriate animal, you will sign an adoption agreement stating that you will keep the animal in provisional custody, and not to give it away, sell it, abandon it or submit it to improper treatment or any treatment contrary to the law. It also requires you feed and care for the animal, and procure the necessary veterinary assistance, otherwise giving up his ownership in favor of APA Nerja-Esperanza.
In the case of adopting cats, we also require that you take some safety measures in the spaces of the home where the cat will reside, like installing netting or mosquito nets on windows, balconies, terraces, etc. to prevent unnecessary and predictable accidents.
All dogs and cats are up to date with their vaccinations and have a microchip and a passport. They have been sterilized and de-wormed, with the exception of puppies that are delivered to us with strict commitment to castration signed in contract.
The adopter must pay the economic contribution corresponding to the veterinary costs listed below. The price will vary depending on if it’s a dog or a cat, a male or female, or whether it’s a puppy. It is important to note that this contribution is not a payment for the adoption, which is free. The payable amount is required because the animal must fulfill all legal requirements to be released for adoption. The money raised is always used to pay for the veterinary costs and food of our animals.

Our association is composed of a groupsof people that dedicate their life and resources to animals in distress. These resources are very limited and the number of animals for adoption are very high. Please respect the work we do.
After the adoption is carried out members of APA Nerja-Esperanza will follow-up with you to check the conditions of the animal. To have reservation of domain for life of the animal, the association can recover it in the event of irregularities.
The adopter may not in any case give away or sell the adopted animal. If any need for re-homing arises you should notify us immediately.
The adopter is required to report the loss, accident or death of the animal in question.
Animals that are not re-homed remain at the refuge indefinitely, or in foster care and residences where a quality of life is maintained in line with each species respective needs.
Because we are volunteers and do not have an office: IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, we recommend that you contact us via the pre-adoption form below. We will reply to you as soon as possible..
